The invoice is the formal request for payment after delivery. It itemizes what was done, adds tax if applicable, states the total, and sets a due date. It's the document that actually gets you paid.
The estimate-to-invoice flow
The professional pattern is: send an estimate, get written approval, do the work, then send an invoice that mirrors the approved estimate. When the numbers match what the client already approved, payment disputes largely disappear.
When to skip the estimate
